Major Timur N. Alptunaer brings a rare combination of frontline clinical expertise, military leadership, and specialized training in human performance under extreme conditions. As a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician and Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), he has dedicated his career to understanding how the human body and mind perform, recover, and thrive in the most demanding environments.
Clinical Excellence and Military Service
Dr. Alptunaer currently practices Emergency Medicine with South Louisiana Medical Associates and serves as a Major in the 946th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment, US Army Reserve Medical Corps. His military service includes two combat deployments as part of a Forward Resuscitation Surgical Team (FRST) and recent deployment in support of Special Operations Command Forward Northwest. This operational experience has given him unparalleled insight into stress physiology, rapid recovery protocols, and the mental resilience required for sustained high performance.
Specialized Training in Resilience and Crisis Medicine
After completing his Emergency Medicine residency at SUNY Stony Brook and earning his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Alptunaer pursued advanced fellowship training in Disaster & Operational Medicine at George Washington University. This specialized training, combined with a Graduate Certificate in Crisis, Emergency, and Risk Management from GWU's School of Engineering, positions him as an authority on human performance optimization during high-stress situations—principles that translate directly to wellness, recovery, and daily resilience.
His background uniquely bridges multiple perspectives: beginning his healthcare career as a Registered Nurse and EMT-Trauma, he understands patient care from every angle. His undergraduate degree in Psychology from Loyola University New Orleans further enriches his holistic approach to health and human behavior.
National Leadership in Public Health and Disaster Response
Dr. Alptunaer's expertise extends beyond the bedside to system-level health planning and crisis management. He served as a contributing member of the Task Force for Mass Critical Care Writing Group, publishing critical guidance in the journal CHEST on implementing contingency strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. His commitment to humanitarian service includes deployment to Mozambique with Team Rubicon to provide disaster relief following Cyclone Idai.
His leadership has been recognized with the ACEP Leadership Award (2022, 2023) and the EMRA President's Award, affirming his contributions to advancing emergency medicine and public health preparedness.

As Adjunct Faculty at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Dr. Alptunaer shapes the next generation of military and emergency medicine practitioners.
