What an Infrared Sauna Actually Does, and What the Evidence Does and Does Not Show
An infrared sauna is a cabin with emitters that heat you directly rather than heating the air. It runs at 110–150°F instead of the 160–200°F of a traditional room, which is why a session usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes rather than 15. Most of them plug into a standard wall socket.
That is what it does. What it does for you is a research question, and the honest answer has more edges than the marketing suggests. This page covers the physical facts first, then what the evidence shows with its populations and limits, then what it does not show — and one specification that nobody in this category publishes.
1. What the cabin actually does
Emitters radiate infrared, your skin and the tissue just below it absorb it, and your core temperature rises without the air around you reaching Finnish temperatures. The practical consequences are all about tolerance and installation:
- Lower air temperature, longer session. 110–150°F is tolerable for 30–45 minutes for most people. A 190°F traditional room is not.
- Most plug in. 55 of the 90 infrared cabins we stock name a standard 120V circuit. Nine need 240V and an electrician.
- Coverage is not complete. Only 38 of the 90 publish a maximum temperature at all. Ask for the figure rather than assuming the range applies.
Full spectrum means near and mid infrared wavelengths on top of far. That is what the term denotes — 27 of the 90 carry it in the manufacturer's own model name. It is a description of the emitters, not a claim about outcome.
2. What the evidence shows, and on whom
Most of what is claimed for infrared saunas is extrapolated from research on traditional saunas, which is a different heat at a different temperature. That extrapolation may be reasonable and it is rarely stated.
Where sauna research is strongest it is cardiovascular, and it comes largely from observational cohort work in Finnish populations — which shows association rather than cause, and does not transfer automatically to other groups or to infrared cabins specifically.

3. What the evidence does not show
Stating this plainly is more useful than another benefits list:
- Infrared specifically is thinly studied. The bulk of the sauna literature is traditional Finnish sauna. Claims about infrared usually borrow it.
- Detox is not supported in the way the word is used in marketing. Sweat carries trace amounts of some substances; excretion happens in the liver and kidneys.
- Weight loss is fluid, and it returns when you drink.
- Dose is unsettled. How hot, how long and how often are not established for infrared, which is why nobody selling one can give you a protocol with evidence behind it.
4. The specification nobody publishes
Not one of the 90 infrared saunas we stock publishes the wavelength its panels emit. Not one, at any price, from any manufacturer.
Wavelength in nanometres is what determines how deeply infrared penetrates and which band you are exposed to. It is the single most relevant number for anyone asking what an infrared sauna does — and the category does not print it.
That has a consequence worth sitting with: nobody selling you an infrared sauna, including us, can tell you what you are actually being exposed to. We can tell you the operating temperature, the electrical requirement, the cabin size and the price. We cannot tell you the emitter spectrum, because nobody publishes it.
By contrast, most of the standalone red light panels we sell do publish theirs. Same company, same catalogue, different disclosure norm — which suggests the sauna manufacturers could publish it and have chosen not to.
Ask for the nanometre figure before you buy. A manufacturer who will not give it is telling you something.
5. What to check instead
Since the physiological question cannot be settled from a product page, the things that can be checked are worth more:
- EMF, with the measuring distance. 37 of the 90 publish an mG figure and only 27 say what distance they measured at. A reading at 6 inches is not comparable to one at 2. The three EMF tiers state what each means in mG.
- The electrical circuit, because it decides your install cost before anything else does.
- What is fitted and what it adds. Chromotherapy is on 81 of 90 — near-universal, so not a reason to pay more. Red light therapy is on more than half.
